We bowled too many short balls: Arvind

The high quality four-pronged pace attack of Karnataka had an off-day and Vidarbha capitalised on the opportunity.

On a surface which required stump-to-stump bowling, only left-arm seamer S Arvind was disciplined as the others remained inconsistent. R Vinay Kumar (1/49), Abhimanyu Mithun (0/35) and Stuart Binny (1/46) troubled the batsmen whenever they hit the right channel but the trio largely bowled either too full or short to allow Vidarbha to reach 195/4 and gain a lead of 79 runs in the process.

Bowling well in the first session on the fourth day will be crucial, said Arvind. "After lunch it was easier to bat and the ball was not moving much. But at the same time we bowled too many short balls to give away boundaries and that helped them. Taking early wickets in the morning will help us get back in the game. We will look to get them all out in another 50 runs and whatever the target we receive, we should definitely be able to chase on this track," he said.

No heated exchanges

The second session saw some of the Karnataka players repeatedly exchange words with Vidarbha's Apoorv Wankhade. On-field umpire Pashchim Pathak intervened twice to bring the situation under control. Arvind didn't read too much into the episode. "It was nothing but a normal chat with the batsman. It happens in most of the matches and nothing serious," he said.

Karnataka faced a slight threat when Wasim Jaffer got off to a strong start. But Arvind troubled the experienced batsman and eventually got him out. "He is a great batsman. Bowling in certain length is important to him. I bowled in the right areas continuously and it worked well. He was hoping that I try something different but I stuck to my strengths," he explained.

Karnataka bowlers had a tough time dealing with their former team-mate Ganesh Satish as he scored a crucial unbeaten 71. "He is of course a good friend. But on the field, he plays for the opposite side and getting him out is our priority. He batted well but we troubled him in parts. Getting his wicket early into the day tomorrow will be vital for us" said Arvind.
