Twenty MPs have demanded Bharat Ratna for Justice V R Krishna Iyer for his contribution to enriching democracy through his work in judiciary and legislature.

They include K T S Tulsi, Ashok Ganguly and Sitaram Yechury. The group of MPs from the Congress, CPM and a few independents shot off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bestow the highest civilian honour on Iyer, who died on December 4.

“We believe that Justice Krishna Iyer is one of the most deserving personalities for the honour of Bharat Ratna. So we request you to propose to honour Iyer with country's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna,” they said.

The letter, signed by veteran journalist and MP H K Dua, former Union Ministers Vayalar Ravi and K V Thomas, P Rajeeve, D Raja, Tapan Sen and T K Rangarajan, said Iyer served the causes of “downtrodden, voiceless and marginalised groups”.

Iyer served as a Judge of the Kerala High Court from 1968 to 1973 and as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India from 1973 to 1980.

He also served as a Member of the Law Commission from 1971 to 1973 and was Chairman of the Kerala Law Reform Commission in 2009.
