A 17-year-old boy is battling for his life after two iron rods pierced through his body at an under construction building in east Delhi’s Mayur Vihar on Saturday, police said.

The boy’s family told doctors that he accidentally fell from the second floor terrace onto the rods protruding out of a concrete pillar on the first floor. The victim has been identified as Arijit Chattarjee, a student of class 12 of Salwan Public School in Mayur Vihar.

“The rods had pierced through the boy’s hip,” said a police officer. A rescue team from the fire department as well as the local police had to cut the rods using gas cutters.

He underwent a surgery at Kailash Hospital in Noida to remove the six-to-seven-inch long rods. Arijit was on the terrace when he lost control and fell around 2 pm.

“A family member saw the incident and informed neighbours and police,” the officer added.

Police teams rushed to the spot along with the fire department officers and they took over half an hour to cut the rods.

Arijit was first taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital from where doctors referred him to Kailash Hospital in Noida. “His condition was stated to be critical,” the officer said.

Arijit’s father Arup works with a multinational company in Noida. Arup told police that his family had recently purchased a plot in Mayur Vihar Phase 3 on which they are constructing a two-storey house.

Police are yet to record Arijit’s statement. “No case has been filed and it will depend on the boy’s statement,” the officer added.

Labourer critical

In a similar incident, a 35-year-old labourer underwent a surgery at the AIIMS trauma centre after an iron rod pierced his abdomen on Saturday.

Raju’s condition is stated to be critical. Police said he accidentally fell from a truck while unloading the rods.
