Alleged mass conversion of 20 lower caste Hindu women into Christianity by luring them with money and better education to their children has once again triggered tension in Uttar Pradesh's Agra district.

Those converted were also promised free medical treatment and employment, according to the reports. The mass conversion that allegedly took place at Nagla Tulsi village in Agra a few days back, triggered tension in the district and hundreds of saffron activists laid siege to the local police station demanding registration of case against the culprits.

At least two women who had converted to Christianity, alleged that they had been offered money and other facilities if they converted.

“We were promised money, free medical care and better education facilities for our children”, said Ramvati Devi, one of the converts.

Earlier also around 250 Muslims were converted to hinduism by saffron outfits at Ved Nagar locality in Agra. Later on the converts said that they had been lured with the promise of ration cards.

The police said that they would investigate the matter before lodging an FIR in this regard. “We are investigating the reports...action will be taken if the allegation of allurements is found to be true”, said police officials in Agra.

In another similar incident, at least six families, all from lower castes, allegedly converted to Christianity in Etah district in the state, about 250 kilometers from here.

Meanwhile, according to a report, the police detained a missionary priest at a village in Raebareli district after reports that he was planning to hold a feast and a prayer meeting on Sunday. The police swung into action against some people opposed to the feast alleging that it was being organized to encourage mass conversion.

In another incident, five yadav families in UP’s Moradabad town, who had converted to Christianity a few years back, have reportedly decided to convert to Hinduism.
Saffron outfits have planned a shuddhikaran yajna (a ritual to purify) for the families on Wednesday. The report has triggered alarm bells in the administration and the police said that it were keeping a close watch on the situation.

The Saffron outfits have warned that they will launch a statewide agitation if the government did not act against those responsible for luring the Hindus to change religion.
