A wild elephant attacked a man, Sampath Kumar, and killed a cattle calf, at Shivanasamudra village in Malavalli taluk on Thursday.

According to Forest department officials, the elephant strayed into the village around 4.30 am and wandered by the church and attacked a calf belonging to Paul, a resident of the village. The calf died on the spot.

The elephant is also said to have damaged a motorcycle. It attacked Sampath who was walking nearby and broke his right leg and left arm. Sampath was rushed to a hospital and was administered first-aid by the Forest department officials.

He was shifted to Mandya for further treatment. Police officials also inspected the spot and suspect that the jumbo might have been roaming in the village throughout the night.

The villagers were instructed to alert the Forest department officials if they spotted wild animals, instead of resorting to bursting crackers or beating drums.

For the last three days pachyderms have been spotted in Chottanahalli, Gajanuru, Hebbani and the region between Cholanahalli and Gaudagere villages.

They have damaged banana, paddy and jowar crops. The visitors who were headed to Gaganachukki Falls near Bluff were diverted as the road was blocked, with the Police and the Forest departments making efforts to chase away the elephant.
