When the bomb explosion threw 36-year-old Bhavani off into the Church Street on Sunday night, few onlookers rushed to her help. They probably thought she was a “suicide bomber”, according to an eyewitness.

Bhavani, along with her cousin Karthik, 23, had arrived from Chennai for Christmas vacation. They were walking on the footpath near the Coconut Grove restaurant when the blast occurred. Both were thrown off into the road. “It didn’t take much time to realise that it was a bomb blast,” an eyewitness said. “When we saw a woman bleeding profusively, it was clear. But unfortunately many didn’t go near her to help her. They were probably thinking she was a suicide bomber.”

Karthik, an MBA student at the Dayananda Sagar College and resident of Mavalli near Lalbagh, injured his shoulder. Bhavani’s children, Lakshmi Thevi and Bharath, escaped miraculously. Narasimha, an auto-rickshaw driver who took Bhavani to Mallya Hospital, said she had sustained serious injuries and was bleeding behind the ear. According to hospital authorities, Bhavani profusively bled to death as a shrapnel was stuck into her brain.

H Sandeep, an employee with iGate, and M R Vinay, an employee with IBM, had come to the place for a union of friends but they too were injured grievously. The duo, along with four others, had come for get-together at the ill-fated restaurant as one of their friends come down from Hyderabad.

They said they were standing by the compound of the restaurant, having a little chat, when the bomb went off. At first, people didn’t panic. “We didn’t even realise about our injury until we began to walk,” they said. The duo suffered serious injuries and were admitted to Hosmat Hospital. A metal object pierced into Sandeep’s left knee and he would have to be operated upon.
