Samajwadi Party legislator Kaptan Singh Rajput was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment in a case of murder by a court.

Rajput and eight others had been charged with murdering a man 13 years back while the victim was being taken to a court in connection with a case.

The special anti-dacoity court sentenced Rajput and his brother but acquitted seven others for lack of evidence.

The court had reserved its judgement on Saturday but had ordered that the MLA and his brother be taken into custody.

According to the prosecution Rajput, his brother and seven others had murdered one Kishenji, a resident of Diha in Orai district in the state in April 2002 while on way to court. Rajput was now certain to lose his membership of the UP Assembly.

He said he would file an appeal against the judgement in the higher court.
