Classic with a modern twist

'RECOLLECTIONS RECONNECTIONS'
Last Updated 08 January 2015, 13:47 IST

It is profoundity that fills the atmosphere at Gallery Sumukha, Wilson Garden. The art exhibition by SG Vasudev named ‘Recollections Reconnections’ seizes the creativity of the artist on the canvas unfolding his expressions.

The veteran artist, who has been exhibiting his innovations for more than five decades now, says that this exhibition is a collection of his old work in a new form and hence the name ‘Recollections Reconnection’.
The paintings that have two themes — landscape and trees, are called as ‘Rhapsody’.
“I am a music-lover. I like all genres of music including Carnatic, Hindustani and jazz. I listen to music while I paint as well. The technique behind music and my paintings is very similar. Music has three layers — ‘raga’, ‘tala’ and ‘pallavi’. My paintings too have three layers.

The first layer is a heavy texture of acrylic white paint and the first coat I paint is a complete painting by itself. Once it dries up, I add more layers to it by adding colours. Then I remove the colours. Some of the original patterns are retained while there are also new patterns that emerge in the process,” says Vasudev.

The paintings of Vasudev drift between the abstract and the real. They are modern yet traditional. The artist who loves Kannada literature says that many of his artworks have been inspired by the stories penned by Kannada writers.

“I went to an art school which taught the Western style. But I did not follow the rest. I wanted to create my own style and give it a contemporary form. I was inspired by works of writers like AK Ramanujan and Girish Karnad. I like the way they bring Indianess to their work and I do the same as well. The only difference is that mine is a visual language,” he says.

The artist, who wants the viewers to enjoy his artworks in their own way,
says that the real appreciation of art is lacking in the country.

“Education about art is lacking in the country. Schools should expose kids to artworks by taking them to art galleries and museums. It is important to educate the kids about art and conduct workshops to bring out the artistic side in each of us,” he wraps up. The exhibition is on till January 10.
