Visually impaired for intl event

A youth from the taluk has won a gold medal in the 19th national blind sports meet, held at New Delhi, recently. He is planning to represent India in the international blind sports event scheduled to be held at either Brazil or Holland, shortly.

K Prasad, a resident of Thattahalli, in the taluk, won the medal in javelin throw by creating a record of 23.42 metre. He has been participating in the national-level meet since 2008 and had won bronze medals in 2009 and 2010.

He is serving in the Information Centre at the office of the State Disability Commissioner, at Sheshadripuram, in Bengaluru.

Till he underwent a surgery for removal of brain tumour at the age of 17, in 2005, he was a normal person. He lost sight after the surgery. In 2007, he was admitted to Sri Ramana Maharshi School for the Blind at J P Nagar, in Bengaluru, and continued studies.

He also secured a diploma in Special Education with a fifth rank in the State-level. Besides, studies, the school identified his interest in shot-put and javelin throw and trained him in the sports. The school also appointed him as a Mathematics and Science teacher.

He has been conducting workshops for special trainers across the State and has so far trained 3,800 such trainers.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Prasad said, he was preparing for CET after PUC exams, when he was diagnosed with brain tumour. “My family members stood by me.

With great difficulty, they treated me. My elder brother learnt about Sri Ramana Maharshi School for the Blind and admitted me there. My family members and the school are responsible for my achievements. Even I hope to do my bit for those in need,” he said.
