LeT commander killed in encounter

A top Lashkar-e-Toiba militant commander was killed in an encounter with security forces in volatile Sopore town of north Kashmir on Wednesday.

Sources said the operation was launched on Tuesday night by Special Operations Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and troops from Army’s 52-Rashtriya Rifles after they received information about the presence of Abu Huzaifa in Sofi Hamam, Chankhan, Sopore, 55 km from here.

“When a search party of troops cordoned off the house, in which Huzaifa and another militant were hiding, they fired on security forces leading to a fierce encounter which lasted for six hours. While Huzaifa was killed his accomplice managed to flee from the spot,” they said.

Police said one AK rifle, three magazines, 89 rounds of AK ammunition, a UBGL, three UBGL grenades and a hand grenade were recovered from his possession”

The house, in which the militants were hiding, has been partially damaged.
A senior police officer told Deccan Herald that Huzaifa was active in the region for several years and involved in number of incidents in Sopore and adjoining areas.
