Ministers' meet to decide on NRI voting

Senior Union Ministers met on Wednesday to discuss ways to implement the Supreme Court order allowing defence personnel in peace stations to get registered as voters in constituency of their posting and voting rights for NRIs.

At the meeting chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Communications Minister Ravishankar Prasad, Law Minister D V Sadananda Gowda and Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth attended.

Sources said around 11 million NRIs and 20 lakh defence and paramilitary personnel will have to be enrolled in electoral rolls.

A detailed discussion was held on how to facilitate voting of NRIs as well as defence, paramilitary and police personnel who are on duty.

Several options were brought before the meeting, which included sending ballot papers to service voters or uploading it on EC website.
Option of sending the ballot paper after casting the vote through courier was also considered.
