Stamp on Queen Victoria steals the show

Philatelists who have come from various parts of the country to take part in the first zonal philatelic exhibition that began in the City on Friday, are a delighted lot.

The philatelists have turned out in good numbers to display their collection, which are receiving great admiration from the visitors.

There are 600 frames containing more than a lakh stamps from various periods, ranging from the British colonial era, to the present day. There are a series of stamps showing India under the rules of different British monarchs. Vast subjects ranging from environment, industrialisation, white revolution, green revolution, birds, animals, saints, temples, former prime ministers, sports personalities, music maestros, scientists and prominent social reformers, form the subjects of the stamps.

A stamp on Queen Victoria stole the show for its astronomical price. Beyond anyone’s guess, the stamp showing the queen upside-down, due to wrong printing is valued at Rs five crore. It was brought out in India for the first time in 1855.

But soon after realising the mistake, the stamps were withdrawn as it outraged the colonials. However, one of the stamps slipped from the heavily-guarded government custody to make its way to philatelist Sita Batheja. The most astonishing fact about the stamp is that it has an insurance of Rs two crore.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who inaugurated the first zonal philatelic exhibition - “KARNAPEX - 2015” at Kanteerava Indoor Stadium, said: The State government is contemplating to utilise the vast network of the Indian Postal department for various government schemes.

“There are more than 10,000 post offices across the State, which the government is seriously contemplating to utilise for various government services. The post offices are already offering many services,” he said.

Hailing the Postal department for coming out with the postal stamps, Siddaramaiah said the stamps are source of information and knowledge and they mirror the history for the future generation.

Former ISRO chairperson K Radhakrishnan was present on the occasion.
