Chaos and lawlessness prevailed in several parts of Lucknow on Thursday, when lawyers went on rampage in protest against killing of a fellow lawyer on Wednesday evening.

The lawyers boycotted work and held demonstrations in the main business centres in the city besides blocking movement of traffic at busy intersections. They also reportedly manhandled passers-by and media personnel, police sources here said.

Blockade of roads resulted in massive traffic jams at many places causing hardship to kids returning from schools and to patients enroute hospitals.

Police sources said a mob of lawyers also damaged a few vehicles. The lawyers demanded immediate arrest of the killers and financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to kin of the deceased.

Additional security personnel had to be summoned from nearby police stations to control the situation.

Nikilendra Gupta, a lawyer, was killed in a bomb attack near his residence on Wednesday. Two men have been detained in this connection. The lawyers have threatened to go on an indefinite strike if the killers are not arrested.
