Scientists rubbish Doomsday theory

At a public interaction programme organised at UVCE Seminar Hall on Saturday  by a group dedicated to the cause of science, `Breakthrough Science Society’, the `2012 doom’ theory was roundly rubbished by all speakers.

Prof M R N Murthy of the Department of Molecular Biophysics at the Indian Institute of Science, said that there was no scientific basis for any of the arguments advanced by the doomsday theorists.

Talks about the impending end of the world were in circulation even much earlier.
Phrenology was a similar branch of science which drew a relationship between the shape of a person’s skull and his or her characteristics. This does not have many takers now, he added. Many therapies, including Reiki, are not scientific at all, Murthy added.

Dr B S Shylaja, Senior Scientific Officer, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, argued against the theory that solar flares would wreck the earth.  “The year 2012 is something all of us need to look forward to since rare celestial phenomena are slated to take place in that year,” she said.

The transit of Venus, which will occur again only after 105 years and a unique solar eclipse figure among them, she said.   Software professional, Satish, elaborated on the technology and special effects used to create the hollywood blockbuster, `2012’, which deals with humans dealing with natural catastrophes in the year as it marked the end of the Mayan calendar. He cautioned viewers not to take the movie literally.
