A rashly driven tanker on Thursday ran over pedestrians, who were crossing the busy Airport Road near Kempapura junction under Hebbal police station limits, killing two people on the spot and injuring three others.
The entire incident was recorded by a CCTV camera of a nearby mall.
The footage shows the tanker ramming into pedestrians and a motorist with great speed near the road divider, killing a girl and the bike rider on the spot. The video grab also showed a traffic police constable trying to chase down the fleeing truck.
The deceased are Arpitha (19), a resident of Devanahalli and B.Com student in a private college at Kempapura, and Anand (25), a resident of Doddballapur and an employee of a private firm.
Arpitha, who came under the wheels, was dragged for about 50 metres and her body was badly dismembered. Anand died on the spot due to severe head injuries.
The accused driver, Yatish Babu (25), is from Hiriyur and is employed with a garment factory at Rajankunte. The truck, carrying chemical filled water from the factory, was proceeding towards Marathalli for disposal, the police said. The truck was moving at a speed of 80-100 kmph and it did not slow down despite the red signal at the pedestrian crossing.
The truck was stopped by policemen at the next signal and the vehicle was seized and the driver arrested, the police added.
People who witnessed the incident were enraged over the fact that the speeding tanker did not slow down though more than 20 people were trying to cross the road together.
While those who climbed on the median were lucky, others who were on the road were run over or hit by the vehicle.
A senior police officer said: “We shifted the injured to a nearby private hospital while the driver was taken for medical verification to ascertain whether he was drunk. The employer will also be questioned to know whether they had verified his driving skills.”
Two of the injured, Akshatha Jain and Kusumashri, students of a private college, and Sumanth Reddy, Anand’s pillion rider, are said to be out of danger.
The public, who gathered at the spot, gheraoed the police for a few minutes demanding action against the driver. The traffic on the entire stretch was blocked for more than 40 minutes.
ACP (Traffic) Dayanand, who visited the spot, said: “The reason for the accident is yet to be investigated, following which action will be taken. There is no sky walk there and it is congested with people moving across the road. Officials should erect a sky walk so that people can cross the road easily. Also, motorists are seen cruising past at top speed, which is dangerous for both the pedestrians and motorists.”
