Last Updated 27 February 2015, 02:08 IST

A 22-year-old woman was found dead at her home under mysterious circumstances on her third marriage anniversary in north Delhi’s Jahangirpuri late on Tuesday night.

Police suspect she was killed by her husband and his brother as they have been absconding since the recovery of the body.

Police are awaiting the autopsy report to ascertain how the woman died.
Prima facie, it appears she was strangled, police said on Thursday.

Victim Priya’s family has accused her husband and his family of harassing her for dowry.
These allegations are being investigated and a search for the suspects has been launched, said police.

Priya’s parents told police that they received a call from her husband about her death on Tuesday night upon which they reached her home. The house was found latched from outside.

“They entered inside to find Priya’s body lying in the bedroom. Her husband Ghanshyam and his brother Sanjay were not found in the house,” said police.
Police were informed and the body was sent for a post-mortem.

The case will be investigated by a sub-divisional magistrate as the couple was married for less than seven years.

Priya had married Ghanshyam, a driver, on 24 February 2012 and had been living with him in Jahangirpuri’s block C.

Harassment starts
Her father Naresh told police that within six months of the couple’s marriage, Ghanshyam allegedly began troubling her for dowry.

He would allegedly beat her whenever she told him that her father was incapable of arranging any money.

She deserted him within three months of alleged beatings and began living with her parents.
Ghanshyam visited Priya at her parents’ home about a month ago and promised to mend his ways upon which she was sent to stay with him.

However, Naresh allegedly received a phone call from Priya on Tuesday evening complaining that Ghanshyam had started beating her up again.

By the time he could visit her, he received a call about her death, said police.
