Protests erupt in Hebbal after tanker mishap

Last Updated 27 February 2015, 08:30 IST

Following the deadly road mishap in Hebbal yesterday, which claimed two lives and left several pedestrians critically injured, around 1000 students from colleges located around Kempapura, Airport Road have taken to streets today demanding safer roads.

The students have staged a protest against the Traffic Police Department, BBMP and other concerned civic bodies. The protestors are demanding for a sky-walk at several places in Kempapura junction.

They have also laid demands such as deployment of more traffic cops to monitor the heavy flow of traffic and implementation of strict speed limits to heavy vehicles.

The traffic on the airport road has come to a standstill as the students have blocked the road. Policemen have rushed to the spot to clear the traffic. Four DCPs, twelve ACPs and five KSRPs have been deployed at the protest site.

A rashly driven tanker rammed into pedestrians and a motorist with great speed near the busy Airport Road near Kempapura  junction under Hebbal police station limits on Thursday, killing a girl and the bike rider on the spot.

The entire incident was recorded by a CCTV camera installed in a nearby mall.

The camera footage also showed a traffic police constable trying to chase down the fleeing truck.
