The waft of nostalgia

Last Updated 28 February 2015, 02:35 IST
Happiness come in different forms and sometimes, it takes the shape of a rich plum cake! Those who have visited ‘Thom’s Bakery and Supermarket’ in Frazer Town would totally agree. The well-known bakery stands tall amidst the concretisation that has engulfed the City and continues to sell eclectic goodies and savouries that are relished by all foodies. Always crowded, one can’t miss the waft of the freshly baked bread, hot off the oven, even before entering. The place is a visual treat,  colourful and gleaming, where one can look at the special cakes for hours. If that’s not enough, one can dig into the puddings, pies and ‘samosas’ available here.

Thom’s was started in 1960 by Thomas, a member of the Bowring Institute and was called as ‘Thom’s Bakery and Stores’. After his death in 1986,  it was shut down for a while and the family opened a supermarket in its place. Biju and Binu, the third-generation owners of the place along with cousin John, say that the bakery is a slice of the past and a testament to the future.

John adds that there is misconception that Thom’s Bakery caters mainly to customers in and around Frazer Town and Richard’s Town. “We cater to customers from all over the City. During Christmas, we have people coming in from places like Koramangala and Basavanagudi. Our biggest USP is the age-old recipes we use, our customers and the fact that we don’t compromise on quality. This is why we have an edge over other eateries,” he says.

Their biggest hit remains their plum cake which, Binu says, is soaked in rum for a long time. “The flavour is a big hit among customers and all our products are freshly baked.”

Many well-known personalities have visited the place. Oscar Fernandes, Vasundhara Das and Margaret Alva are some of the names Binu can recollect.

The place hasn’t undergone many changes because the brothers want to keep the charm of old Bengaluru alive. “We always try to serve fresh products and natural flavours. Our bakers are old-school and extremely accurate with the techniques and flavours. We have a lot of experienced and regular bakers, who have been with us for a long time,” says Binu. They make a number of special cakes on order and the kiwi and fresh cream ones are the most sought-after. Binu says that he will definitely pass the family business on to his children if they are interested. “I haven’t thought so much about the future yet,” he laughs.
