Social Welfare minister, H Anjaneya announced a special package of Rs 10 crore for developmental works in tribal haadis of the district, here on Friday. He said that the State government would release more funds if required, for any project that would benefit the tribal communities.

He was speaking ahead of his stay in Maanimoole Haadi in H D Kote taluk of the district. He said that steps are being taken to improve the standard of Ashram Schools, meant exclusively for tribal children. A team of experts from the State have been sent on a tour to Kerala, to analyse the condition of schools for tribal children in the State, he said. He also promised to study the model of tribal schools in Kerala and take necessary steps to improve quality of education in Ashrama schools.

“Tribals should be allowed to construct houses in places where they live in. All the basic facilties demanded by them should be provided, without any fuss. The Forest department should avoid objecting to the developmental activities taken up in tribal haadis,” he said.

There have been complaints by tribals against the Forest department that they do not even allow for a borewell to be dug or installation of power lines. This has affected tribals, he said.

He noted that there were complaints that title deeds have not yet been distributed to several tribal families. “Concerned officials of the district should conduct a survey of all tribal haadis and ensure that all tribal families are distributed the title deeds. Deputy Commissioner and Zilla Panchayat CEO should ensure the same,” he said.

The minister also announced that the government would sanction colour television sets, along with a dish connection to all tribal haadis of the State. Families who have title deeds for the land they live in, will be allowed to dig borewells, using funds from Ganga Kalyana scheme.

During an interaction with the minister, the tribals demanded that title deeds be distributed to all tribal families. They complained that several families were forced to evacuate their residences during the construction of Nugu and Taraka reservoirs and urged the minister to ensure proper rehabilitation to them.

Forest department officials have continued to harass tribals on various pretexts, they added. Anjaneya, in a programme held during the day distributed various benefits such as ration cards, Bhagya Lakshmi bonds and funds for women self help groups.
