Two arrested, police bust gang selling guns

With the arrest of two persons, including a woman, police claim to have busted a gang which ‘bartered’ country-made pistols for ammunition — or the other way around — with other gangs.

This way, they were able to ensure that their customers did not have to hunt around for buying ammunition for the illicit weapons sold to them.

The target customers are often the trigger-happy criminals in and around Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

On February 23, specific input was received that members of such a gang from Bihar’s Munger district would arrive at Anand Vihar ISBT in east Delhi.
A trap was laid which led to the arrest of Mohammad Rabbani, 35, and Chunni Beghum, 30.

“They were carrying two pistols and 900 ordnance factory-made 7.65 mm cartridges,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

Upon interrogation, the arrested culprits told police that the firearms manufactured in Munger were being traded for cartridges sourced from gangs based in MP.

“In effect, the peddlers from one end of the syndicate carry firearms which are delivered to peddlers coming from the other end of the syndicate who carry cartridges for delivery to gun peddlers,” Yadav added.

The outcome of the syndicated activity is that both the ends are in the position of supplying complete package — a pistol along with cartridges — to the intending criminal for a high profit, police added.

It has also been revealed that the gun peddlers have roped in female operatives who accompany men while travelling from Munger as a couple.

“The female members also split the illicit cargo and owing to their gender, they easily pass through cursory check employed at border areas,” Yadav said.
