To reduce traffic congestion and provide a direct and quicker commute to mainly IT professionals, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced new bus services to Electronics City from Nice Road, Attibele, Heelalige railway station, the Central Silk Board and Wipro corporate office (Sarjapur Road).

The services, introduced on Wednesday (a Bus Day), will ply via Nice Road. The BMTC also introduced Samparka Sarige buses to Electronics City Phase 1 and 2 besides special buses for women.

The services were introduced and augmented after IT giant Wipro conducted a survey of its employees and stressed the need for a dedicated service. A statement by Wipro said the company had about 35,000 employees in Bengaluru and nearly 50 percent of them used public transport. In the survey, 71 per cent of the 11,000 respondents said they would use public transport if it is reliable and convenient.

As part of the survey, Wipro surveyed and recorded its employees’ address, their travel preferences and patterns. Employee home locations across Bengaluru were geocoded to determine the proximity of employees to existing BMTC routes and identify any gaps in BMTC services.

The survey revealed that 66.5 per cent employees spend at least 45 minutes commuting to work and 74.3 per cent spend at least 45 minutes returning home from work. More than two-third (70.8 per cent) of the respondents were willing to switch to public transport.
