The State transport corporations, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), have been awarded for their outstanding performance and innovative projects.

While BMTC received the ASRTU Productivity Award for minimum operational cost, KSRTC has won the Public Transport Innovation Award. BMTC has achieved this for the fourth consecutive year and the KSRTC is the only State road transport undertaking in India to have won the Public Transport Innovation Award for its innovative projects.

Operations streamlined
Officials say that bus operations in BMTC have been streamlined by optimising bus schedules, minimising dead kilometers, rationalising fleet to increase efficiency and enhance vehicle utilisation, which has resulted in effective kilometer improvement and lowered the cost per kilometre, besides decrease in staff ratio per schedule. In addition to this, BMTC has adopted eco-friendly buses, rainwater harvesting, water recycling technologies, among others.

Also, cost control is achieved by the corporation through Prompt Payment Discount scheme for all items procured by the corporation.

All the efforts made by BMTC in various arenas have brought down the operational cost to Rs. 37.16 per km as compared to the operation cost of other STU’s (without the element of tax) including Delhi, Pune, Ahemdabad, Mumbai and Kolkata.

The awards were given during the 59th Annual Conference of State Transport Undertakings (STUs) held at Gujarat, by Vijay Chibbar, Secretary, Govt of India, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

KSRTC officials said that KSRTC has initiated many environment friendly initiatives to protect the environment and reduce carbon footprints such as fuel blending, clean development mechanism project, regular and surprise emission checks, afforestation, solar lighting, water recycling, water softening, training at regular intervals for the staff, solid waste management and many more.
