JOIN USFor 23-year-old Nikita K Jain, March 25 will be a special day. She will be awarded four gold medals for scoring the highest marks in MBBS at the 17th annual convocation of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) to be held at Nimhans Convention Centre here. Speaking to Deccan Herald on Friday, Nikita, who has bagged 51st rank in All India PG entrance exam, said she wanted to study Radiology at the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, because it was a promising subject these days. Jain did her schooling in Vidya Mandir in Malleswaram, pre-university from Mount Carmel College and MBBS from the MS Ramaiah College.
“I’m the only doctor in my family. My brother and sister are pursuing BBM and MBA. I like to go out, watch movies, go shopping, read books and listen to music. But in the last one year I did none of these things because of my internship and studies. I wanted to get through medical in the first attempt and it has paid off,” she said.
Mangala Gowri K, 23, also from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, will be awarded five gold medals for scoring the highest (84 per cent) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and for being the topper (76.8 percent).
Sacrificed all for medicine
She did her schooling from the National High School, Basavanagudi, and has a degree from the National PU College. She loves to sing and indulge in crafts but she sacrificed it all for her medical course. She is also the only doctor in her family. Her younger sister, who doing her second PUC, is interested in engineering.
Vijeta Vithalray Rane, 24, a resident of Sirsi, did her MBBS from S Nijalingappa Medical College, Bagalkot. She will get four gold medals for scoring the highest marks in general medicine (79 per cent). “I decided to become a doctor when I was in ninth standard. I learnt that there is a shortage of doctors. I am interested in Paediatrics. I do not have time for hobbies. I like to read, sing and watch television. I hum to relax myself. But in last one year all this was put to rest because I was busy with my internship at S N Medical College and further studies,” she said.
She too is the only doctor in her family. Her mother is a government schoolteacher, her father an accounts officer in the KSRTC and her elder brother works in Corporation Bank. Roger Lau Sir Long from College of Dental Sciences, Davangere, will receive five gold medals.
These four are being honoured with medals for individual achievements, said Dr KS Ravindranath, RGUHS Vice Chancellor.
