An ensemble for Easter

Powerful act
Last Updated 24 March 2015, 15:15 IST

The ‘Glorious’ choir presented an Easter musical titled ‘The Victor’s Crown’ in the City recently. The musical comprised a cast of 220 singers and actors aged between six and 70 years. The musical did well to trace the story of Christ from death till resurrection.

The choir’s performance was knit together with a related performance by the Glorious children’s choir, G+, the 50-member senior choir and a team of actors led by Kevin Gray. The choreography by Richard Tholoor Dance Project was a treat in itself.
The musical was touching simply because it was presented in a powerful manner. The ‘Glorious’ choir sang a whole range of songs in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Each song narrated a story. The title song, ‘The Victor’s Crown’, and the song ‘Via Dolorosa’ were led by Michelle Khiangte.

The musical was conceptualised and directed by Esther and Reji Chandy. Sharing his experience of directing such a vast musical, Reji Chandy said, “It isn’t easy to handle people from five to 70 years essaying different acts on one stage. It has been a challenge for us to come up with something unique every year. We not only conceptualised the whole musical but even the smallest of details were worked to perfection.”

Kevin holds a regular job but he makes time to pursue his love for music. Kevin who played the part of Jesus in the musical said, “You are playing an important role and the message this play sends out to people is powerful. I enjoyed every moment of being a part of such a huge ensemble.”

Those in the audience confessed that they were thoroughly impressed with the discipline and commitment of each performer. Jacob John, a musician and a member of the audience said, “We all know what Good Friday and Easter means but to present the same concept in such a creative manner was impressive.”

The instrumentalists comprised Ebenezer John Premkumar on the rhythm and lead guitar, Jason Kishander on the bass guitar, Ashish John on the drums, Joel Jacob and Kenneth Menezes on the keyboards. The line of soloists in the choir were impressive and they included Joby Kurian, Mercy Samuel, Allen Daniel, Joel George, Ruth Cherian, Smitha Samuel, Eunice, Cyril Anto, Joel Joy, Pilith Prabhu, Cyril Philip, Renita Esther, Kezia James and Christina Joseph. Among them the songs, ‘Rolled Away’, rendered by Rahul, Joel and Blesson with the solo dance by Richard Tholoor won the audience.

‘The Victor’s Crown’ will be staged again on March 29, 6.30 pm at Christ University Auditorium.
