Flying Garden Tower to come up in Frankfurt

Last Updated 26 March 2015, 13:03 IST

The Flying Garden Tower, designed by Coop Himmelb(l)au, will form part of an emerging district in the German city of Frankfurt. The building will be located in Gateway Gardens, an urban district development that is part of Frankfurt Airport City, one of Europe’s main transportation hubs.

With its outstanding profile and polygonal shape, the Flying Garden Tower is a 69-metre-tall building that would  be easily recognisable from any part of Frankfurt airport, as well as from nearby motorways. This makes the building a highly visible landmark in this new district.

The architecture and sustainable design of the Flying Garden Tower respects specific requirements of  the location and offers technological solutions for the preservation of the local environment. The elliptical shape and orientation of the building optimises its climate efficiency. The east and west facades are well exposed to solar light, so they are protected by a buffer zone of atriums containing suspended ‘flying gardens’.

Also, the north and south facades are optimally aligned in terms of energy efficiency, with  flexible and adaptable spatial concepts that enable the provision of office cubicles and  private and open-plan offices.
