Cong to target BJP-ruled states over scams

Last Updated 26 March 2015, 20:33 IST

The Congress has stepped up campaign against the BJP-led governments in Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh as it believes the respective chief ministers were on a weak wicket.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is expected to visit the two states soon to boost the morale of party workers who are making attempts to pin down Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his Chhatisgarh counterpart Raman Singh in corruption scams.

The BJP takes pride in portraying Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh as model states which have returned the party to power for three successive terms.

“The Congress president has received invitations from the party units of the two states for a visit. A decision is expected to be taken soon,” a senior party leader said.

The two states also faced the brunt of untimely rains which has affected crop across large tracts of farm land. Madhya Pradesh and Chhatisgarh have emerged as significant contributors to the country’s food basket. “These states are the low hanging fruit for the Congress. We can dislodge the BJP if there is unity in the party,” a Congress leader said.
Signs of unity have been visible in Madhya Pradesh with regional satraps Digvijay Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kamal Nath putting up joint appearances to attack Chouhan for his supposed involvement in the recruitment scam.

In Chhatisgarh, Congress has latched on to reports of irregularities in the state’s much-lauded public distribution system and accused chief minister Raman Singh of indulging in corrupt practices in connivance with rice millers.
