Serial burglary; traders observe bandh

A serial burglary has been reported from Bettadapura village in the taluk on Friday night. Silverware and cash, worth more than Rs 2 lakh, have been stolen from 10 shops. Alleging police negligence, traders observed a bandh on Saturday.

The burglars have gained entry into 10 shops on the Periyapatna-Hassan road in the village, but only four shop owners have lodged complaints. The burglars have opened the rolling shutters of Prakash Jewellers and have stolen 8.5 kg silver ware, worth Rs 1.94 lakh.

Owner of Jeevan Liquor Bar has complained that Rs 6,000 has been stolen, Rs 5,000 from Balaji Stores and Rs 4,500 from Veerabhadreshwara Traders is missing. However, the rest of the traders have not yet complained.

Neglect alleged
Complaining that the Police department is neglecting the problems of the people, traders in the village downed the shutters of their establishments and staged a dharna. They alleged that there is no law and order in the village and the Police personnel do not patrol during night time.

Raitha Sangha taluk unit vice-president B J Devaraj said, the Police department has turned a blind-eye to the illegal extraction and transportation of sand and also theft of firewood from forests.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kala Krishnamurthy, Deputy Superintendent Jayaram, Circle Inspector Prasanna Kumar and Sub-Inspector Anil Kumar visited the spot.
