Basu condition ‘very critical’

Kolkata, Jan 15, DHNS:

The condition of CPM veteran Jyoti Basu, who has already suffered multi-organ failure, ‘is very, very critical’, the doctors attending on him conceded on Friday.

“I don’t know what’ll happen and when it’ll happen,” one of the doctors in the medical board at the private hospital told reporters here. Given the grim situation of his health, the board is likely to review his overall condition during an emergency session at midnight.

Basu who had been put on haemo-dialysis on Thursday, was administered dialysis again for two hours on Friday and required a higher dose of isonotrops to stabilise his blood pressure.
“But given the condition of his lungs, liver, kidney and heart, it’s extremely difficult to say what will happen. He had stabilised earlier, but has again been sinking and is now completely dependent on life support, as his heart too has been partially affected,” said Dr Susruth Banerjee, a doctor at the private hospital.

Basu, he said, might need dialysis on Saturday as well. According to him, the 95-year-old leader’s heart was unable to pump blood properly as he has already developed Tricuspid-Regurgitation.

His brain too, doctors say, has stopped functioning.
“Basu has been a fighter throughout his life and we hope for the best,” CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said after visiting Basu at the hospital.
