The traffic police and the horticulture department have decided to ban the movement of vehicles inside Cubbon Park on Sundays in an effort to reduce air and noise pollution. The ban is likely to come into force on April 26, the last Sunday of this month.

The decision to impose the ban was taken at a meeting of senior traffic police officers, director of Horticulture department and other officials concerned, Mahantesh Murgod, Deputy Director of Horticulture Department (Cubbon Park) told Deccan Herald.

“This will be done on an experimental basis for a month. Based on the success rate, it will be extended to weekends and public holidays. Tentatively, plan is to enforce the ban from April 26. We have asked the traffic police to issue a notification, which is expected within a weeks’ time. It is observed that there is a heavy movement of vehicles inside the Cubbon Park and this has resulted in huge noise and air pollution. The ban would
help reduce the pollution a little if not to a great extent,” he added.

The ban on vehicles will also encourage people to walk around the park without any hassles and also the children can enjoy their time by playing around without their parents worrying about vehicles zooming past, explained Murgod.

The officials from the Horticulture department said initially they wanted the traffic police to ban the vehicles on weekends.

But they were told that it would lead to traffic congestion on adjoining roads, as the traffic is heavy during weekends. Once ongoing TenderSure and Metro works around the park are completed, the ban might be extended to weekends.

Babu Rajendra Prasad, DCP (Traffic-East) told Deccan Herald: “Discussions are on to make parking arrangements after the ban is implemented. For now, we have planned to make parking arrangements on King's Road and near the Visvesvaraya Industrial Museum, but it is yet to be finalised.”

A traffic policeman posted at Cubbon Park said though it is a good move, the number of vehicles will increase on the roads adjoining the park leading to traffic jams. “On Sundays, there might be fewer vehicles but we can never predict the traffic in this area.”
