VMware India, part of the $6.04 billion US-based virtualisation and cloud infrastructure solutions major VMware, on Tuesday inaugurated its state-of-the-art campus built at a cost of $120 million in the city.

Reinforcing the importance of India in its global game plan, VMware Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger said its operations in India are second in size only to the company’s Palo Alto headquarters in the US.

“We made India the major hub for our R&D activities as the team plays a critical role in product development in all of VMware’s strategic imperatives like software-defined data centre, hybrid cloud, and end-user computing,” he said.

The new 4,38,000 square feet facility will play a strategic role in VMware’s global growth strategy for the mobile cloud era, the company said. It completed the campus as part of its commitment to invest $500 million in India by 2017.

VMware said the new campus features a world-class Executive Briefing Center to showcase VMware’s entire portfolio of solutions, providing customers and partners across Asia-Pacific with the opportunity to see the company’s products and services in action, and discuss them face to face with executives and engineers.

The current staff strength of VMware in India stands at 3,300 and it has plans to hire 500 more by the end of this year. On the opportunities in the country, Gelsinger said, “Our continued support of the India government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative illustrates the important role this nation plays in the company's long-term strategic global growth plans.”
