Falling for Niagara

Travel tales

Since my early childhood, I have loved waterfalls because they remind one of the fact that “The greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall”. My visit to the biggest waterfall in the world, the Niagara Falls, was an unforgettable experience. The easiest way I can describe Niagara Falls is to ask people to imagine James Hilton’s ‘Shangri-La’. If you ask me, I would say, Hilton might have imagined ‘Shangri-La’ after seeing Niagara Falls.

It was a day-long journey from New York to Niagara Falls. Although I was tired, the sight of the Falls brought a new energy in me. The sight of the waters steeply falling over a rocky ledge was a feast to the eyes. When it toppled into the plunge pool, it foamed up and the place was covered with mist. It was just perfect!

Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls which sprawl between Canada and the United States. The three waterfalls are Horse Shoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. The Horse Shoe Falls lie towards the Canadian side and the American Falls lie towards the side of America. Bridal Veil Falls is also located in America. There is a package called ‘Maid of Mist’, wherein the visitors are taken very close to the pool in a splendid boat. As one approaches the pool, one can hear the crashing of the waves and have a  breath-taking view. One can soak up every drop of powerful spray aboard the ‘Maid of Midst’.

Niagara has everything around. A park to relax and restaurants for hungry souls. There are motels to stay at and a corner store for light shopping. In the evenings, intense spotlights bathe the Falls in different colours. Because of lack of time, we missed watching it and I will regret it till the next time I visit the Falls.

I returned from Niagara with a hope that some day I will go back during winter to witness the winsomeness of the frozen Niagara.
