Transport likely to be affected severely

Educational institutions and business establishments, including petrol bunks, restaurants and cinemas, in Bengaluru and neighbouring districts are likely to remain closed on Saturday due to a bandh call given by pro-Kannada groups.

Nearly 700 organisations across the State have backed the call. Transportation is likely to be affected severely. While auto-rickshaws will stay off the roads in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Mandya, Hassan, Kolar, Chikkaballapur and Ramanagara districts among others, the KSRTC and BMTC have decided to maintain skeletal service. Officials said a final call would be taken on operating or suspending the services after analysing the situation and going by police advisory.

Though train services will not be hit, the South Western Railway said a decision will be taken depending on the law and order situation on Saturday. In Bengaluru, those headed to the airport may also land in trouble and should make alternative arrangements as airport taxis and cab aggregators such as TaxiForSure and Ola are sending text messages that they are not taking advance bookings for Saturday services. They said their operations would depend on Saturday’s situation.

However, essential services such as ambulances, pharmacies, supply of milk and vegetables will not be affected.

The VTU has declared a holiday for all the colleges under it, according to Vice-Chancellor H Maheshappa. Bangalore University does not function on a third Saturday, so it’s a holiday for colleges affiliated to it. The RGUHS has not declared a holiday and will function normally, said Vice-Chancellor K S Ravindranath.

Meanwhile, the police have heightened security to prevent any untoward incidents during the bandh. ADGP (Law and Order) N S Megharikh told Deccan Herald that 104 platoons of KSRP have been stationed across the State and 40 of them deployed in Bengaluru.
Special attention has been given to Ramanagara, Mandya, Mysuru, Kolar, Tumakuru, Hassan and Bengaluru.
