Size seems important in today’s world where the look and feel of everything is paramount. But this man is impervious to such perceptions. Meet Ram Kapoor, the oversized hero of Indian television and films, who now stars in a new show called Dil Ki Baatein Dil Hi Jaane, on Sony TV.

Kapoor clinched fame for his roles in the daily soaps Kasamh Se and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain. The actor had his share of controversies when an intimate scene with his co-star Sakshi Tanwar became the talk of the town. The TRP of the show surged, but people questioned the extent of intimacy shown on screen.

Ram Kapoor’s popularity increased and brought him opportunities to act in Udaan, Karthik Calling Karthik, Student Of The Year, and not to forget his double avatar in Sajid Khan’s Humshakals. Now, the actor admits that he has to juggle time between the show and his involvement in the films. Kapoor’s film with co-star Sunny Leone called Kuch Kuch Locha Hai is set for a May release. According to him, “She is one of the most professional actors I have ever met.”
In the new show, however, Ram (his character is named Ram, too) plays the husband of a woman (Gurdeep Kohli) who suffers a life-threatening disease. What attracted him to the story that revolves around the couple and their two children? “I am an actor who is on the lookout for niche themes. This show deals with euthanasia and the moral decisions around the concept. Many families may have gone through it. So the show fit the criterion. And when I heard about veteran director Mahesh Bhatt’s association with it, I couldn’t resist the offer. He is someone I admire.”

The show may project a sad aura, but Kapoor is quick to correct that “It’s not at all a tragic series,” and explains that “the promos have depicted the sadness because the story begins with a tragedy, but be assured that it does not travel with it.”

It’s hard not to ask if he has had such incidences in his life, “Fortunately, no! Personal life is good.” His wife, Gautami Kapoor, is an actor too, who now stars in a television show called Tere Shahar Mein. “I am happy about her professional success with a respectful channel. I will always support her because she had the luxury of not working for a few years because she had to bring up our kids.” Kapoor shares a special bond with his daughter. “I have quit smoking because of her, and it’s been one year now.” With the help of very caring house helps, they manage the kids at home. Also helpful is the fact that both their mother’s houses are closeby.

Professionally, he says, “I have suffered quite a few ups and downs in my career of 15 years. I mean, many talented actors are struggling still. I feel fortunate in many ways.” Does the couple discuss work at home? “Yes, we can discuss work because we are both actors. And while taking up Dil Ki Baatein... Gautami did understand the depth of the character. We know the difficulty in getting a good role on TV. After Bade Achhe Lagte Hai, I was given similar roles. If I wanted to earn money, I could have chosen those shows, but I waited instead, and my patience has paid off.”
