Second round of RTE online lottery kicks off

Last Updated 20 April 2015, 19:48 IST

The second round of online lottery for reserved quota RTE seats was conducted on Monday and as many as 17,198 seats were allotted across the State.

Mohammed Mohsin, Commissioner for Public Instruction, who inaugurated the second round, requested parents to admit their wards by April 30, failing which their allotments will be cancelled. He further stated that the allotments in this round are only available for seats within a ward and not outside it.

Out of the total 26,918 available seats about 9,720 vacant seats are remaining after the second round. These vacant seats belong to the OBC category. There were no takers for about 1,206 reserved quota seats in 237 schools across the State. Mohsin said that this might be due to the lack of infrastructure in these schools.

Overall there were a total of 1.11 lakh seats reserved under the 25 percent quota this year, of which 84,155 seats were filled in the first round of allotments. The completion of admissions in the first round of allotments was delayed.

Anxious parents whose wards were not alloted seats had to wait for over a month for the second round to be announced. The first round was conducted on March 12. About the delay, Mohsin said: “There were a number of cases of duplicate application forms. In one instance parents had filed as many as 15 applications forms. Then there were cases where parents filled forms for each of the five schools allowed. Updating of information by the BEOs also took a lot of time.”

Many students who were allotted seats in the first round were not able to claim them as schools refused to entertain such claims.

While the department has taken action against a few schools by filing criminal cases, the commissioner made it clear that candidates who did not take their seats in the first round will not get seats in the second round.

Of the 17,198 seats that were allotted on Monday, 12,953 seats belong to OBC, 3,436 to SC and 809 to ST categories. In Bengaluru, a total of 25,800 applications were received for 8,739 seats in the second round.
