JOIN USThe organs of a brain-dead man, who was admitted to BGS Global Hospitals in the City, were harvested on Wednesday morning.
Vijay Kumar, 27, was shifted from Nimhans to BGS Global Hospitals through a green corridor on Tuesday.
While his liver was transplanted to a 56-year-old male patient from Karnataka at the BGS Global Hospitals, his eyes were sent to Narayana Nethralaya and the heart valves to Narayana Hrudayalaya. Since his kidneys had been infected, they could not be transplanted, a source at the BGS Global Hospitals said.
Kumar was admitted to Nimhans on April 17, where he was identified as having suffered brain haemorrhage. Despite surgery, he did not show signs of recovery. On Tuesday, he was declared brain-dead and the Zonal Co-ordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation counselled the family members to give its consent to donate his organs.
Kumar had a fall six years ago and did not get treated despite recurrent headache. “He would faint frequently and we were told he had low BP. On Friday, Kumar fell again and started bleeding profusely. He then failed to recover,” his friend Narendra Kumar said.
Kumar, who was a building painter by profession, was married with two children aged four and two.
