Melbourne now boasts of the most expensive apartment in Australia, with a luxury penthouse snapped up by an anonymous investor for a whopping $19 million. Located in the city’s tallest skyscraper, ‘Australia 108’, the exclusive property was purchased by a Chinese businessman.

The 750 sq. metre penthouse, which is yet to be built, will span the entire 100th floor of the building. Hailed as the most expensive single apartment ever sold in Australia, the asking price works out at $25,000 per square metre.

A private glass elevator will lift the new occupant up to the lavish pad from the grand foyer on level 98, where he can have a 360-degree scenic view of the city. The 319-metre structure, in the inner-city suburb of Southbank, will eclipse Melbourne’s current tallest building, the Eureka Tower, and is due for completion in 2019. Work on the site began recently with the demolition of the former building. The skyscraper will be constructed in three phases.

The $770 million development has some unique internal features, including infinity pools, private dining spaces, saunas and theatres.More than 1,000 of the 1,105 apartments in the building have already been sold. It was revealed in March that three local buyers had shown interest in the penthouse. “The interested parties couldn’t be more different with their background, their demand and use of the property,” said Andrew Leoncelli, managing director of CBRE Residential Projects Victoria, the main real estate agent for the development.
The previous highest recorded apartment sale in Melbourne was that of a $14.8 million pad in the deluxe 150 East complex.
