It’s curtains up for the ‘mother’ of all Indian reality shows. As season two of Dance India Dance: Super Moms on Zee TV takes off, mothers of all shapes and sizes, of all hues and housewifely aspirations, take centre stage in a space otherwise cluttered with comedians (Comedy Nights with Kapil), stunt masters (Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi: Season 6), singing stars (India’s Got Talent) and what not!

So, what makes the second season of DID: Super Moms better and bolder? Or is it ‘bad-er’ than the inaugural edition? The grand old man of Indian disco dancing, Mithun Chakraborty, who had become the signature face of the show previously, is missing. But, the arrival of another dance master, the inimitable Bollywood actor Govinda, on the judges panel, compensates for Mithun da’s absence.

That DID Super Moms heralds Govinda’s comeback is no mean milestone, for the star of Raja Babu fame returns to the small screen after 14 years. In a way, he lives up to the popular expression, Govinda Aala Re. He joins the judges’ panel of Geeta Kapur (popularly called Geeta maa) and choreographer Terence Lewis. The judges go beyond the call of judging and add their bit of melodrama to this talent-hunt template. The auditions were conducted in 16 cities of India.

For judge Terence, this show seems ‘child’s play’, and how! In the opening episodes he earned the title ‘babysitter’ from Geeta maa after a participating mom requested Terence to hold her baby while she performed. She considered him a lucky charm. Subsequently, all aspiring supermoms were eager to encash on Terence’s talent in pacifying toddlers when it was their turn on the stage. One wailing baby even fell silent as soon it was placed in the judge’s care.

Now, about the contestants who drive the show. They do bring melodrama to the content with their unique stories and tales of passion. There is the youngest supermom, 24-year-old Sujata Suresh from Pune, who is trained in Kalaripayattu, salsa and jazz. The oldest supermom, Yasmin, who has been cast with Govinda in a Bollywood film, grooves with him to the tune of Mungda, and impresses the judges by pirouetting her way to bag a set of wings. Somya Shree from Karnataka showcases her skill in salsa, freestyle and Tollywood. Then there is Swatabdi from Gujarat who dances with Govinda for Husn hai Suhana… while Sneha from Uttar Pradesh gets Govinda to shake a leg to UP Wala Thumka Lagao.

Can Punjab be far behind? So, showcasing the Punjabi tadka is Komal Deep Kaur from Chandigarh, who has strong support from her husband and in-laws. There is also Harpreet Khatri from Mumbai. She has not only brought to the show her talent in hip-hop and Bollywood freestyle, but also her toddler, whom judge Terence first played babysitter to!

And not to forget a contestant who becomes a face in the crowd simply because she hardly shows her face! Yes, participant Pushpa is the one who takes the stage with her face swathed in her ghunghat (veil)! TV actor Karan Wahi hosts the show.

Novelty is the spice needed to drive any reality show. In that sense, this season of DID Super Moms ropes in freshness by bringing actor Govinda on screen. It remains to be seen how far the show can go riding on his star quotient and the grooving of moms to retain its freshness. Or, will it end up being a season of cosmetic change?
