Kingpin of fake currency racket arrested

Vivek Nagar police have arrested a person on charge of circulating counterfeit currency on Thursday. The police have seized Rs 40,000 fake notes, in the denomination of Rs 500, from the arrested.

 

According to police, the accused has been identified as Shankar, 31, a native of Chennai. Shankar was a prime accused in the counterfeit currency racket that was cracked by the CCB sleuths.

He is said to be the kingpin of a racket transporting the fake notes from Thailand. He was also involved in circulating the counterfeit currency among the middlemen operating in different parts of the country.

Based on a tip off, Shankar was arrested from Vivek Nagar while he was trying to circulate the counterfeit notes. He revealed to the police that he was running a job consultancy office in partnership with his friend. After he incurred loss in the business, he took to circulating the fake notes to make a quick buck, said the police.

CCB officials said he is currently in judicial custody and will be taken into police custody to gather more information about the racket.
