Two acres of Allalasandra Lake land recovered

42 houses razed during two-hour operation

Continuing the encroachment eviction drive, a team of Revenue department officials, led by Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner V Shankar, on Saturday recovered two acres of land worth Rs 50 crore at Allalasandra Lake near Yelahanka.

In the drive which started at 8 am and lasted till 10:30 am, as many as 42 houses that had  come up on the lake bed were razed using earthmovers, amidst protests by the occupants.

To thwart any accidents, police personnel were deputed at the demolition spot.
Residents were furious at the timing of the drive carried out by the authorities.

Subbamma, who lost her house during the drive, said, “It would have been good if the officials had given us two more days. As I was  staying alone, I found it difficult to shift utensils, home appliances and other things.”

Kumar, another resident, said that while they were handed over tokens and given assurances of getting alternative sites by the authorities, the displaced people have still not been given title deeds. “Hope the government authorities take necessary steps to address our woes,” he added.

Tahsildar (Bangalore North) Balappa Handigunda said, “Considering the background of residents, we have decided to provided alternative sites to them. The notice was issued four months back to the encroachers.  The recovered land has been handed over to the State government.”

In another encroachment drive that was carried out on Saturday at Nellukunte Lake at Bengaluru North taluk  eight acres of land was recovered.

“D Lingappa, H P Ashok, Poornima N Swamy, Chikkegowda had encroached the tank bed of Nellukunte Lake and built houses whose total worth is Rs 10 crore. The drive will continue on Monday and the recovered land will be handed over to the State government,” said Tahsildar Handigunda.

In all the Bengaluru Urban district authorities on Saturday recovered 25 acres and 20 guntas of government land including four water bodies in two taluks of the district.
