The Aam Aadmi Party government on Saturday announced that a farmer compensation scheme will be named after the Rajasthan farmer Gajendra Singh, who had committed suicide at an AAP rally.

The announcement came a day after senior party leader Sanjay Singh met the family of the farmer in Nangal Jhamarwada village in Rajasthan's Dausa district.

According to the AAP leader, Gajendra’s family asked the Delhi government to treat his death as martyrdom. The family also demanded job for one its member.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has promised to provide a job to any child of the family after he or she attains the age of 18. He also told that the compensation scheme for rain-hit farmers will be named after Gajendra.

The Delhi chief minister had called on Gajendra’s brother and accepted the two demands made by them.

Early this month, Kejriwal had announced a relief of Rs 20,000 per acre to Delhi farmers who faced losses in crop damage due to unseasonal rain. The AAP government claims that it is the highest compensation for crop damage among all states so far.

Gajendra Singh hanged himself from a tree during an AAP rally at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday. The farmers were protesting against the Centre’s proposed land Bill.

A senior official said a delegation of AAP legislators Naresh Balyan, Rajesh Rishi and Rajesh Gupta who met the family with Sanjay Singh conveyed the family's demand to Kejriwal.

The AAP representation handed over a cheque of Rs 10 lakh to Gajendra’s family and also showed them a video clip in support of the party's claim that AAP leaders were not responsible for the incident.
