Media persons are deriving sadistic pleasure in character assassination of individuals, instead of striving for the development of the society, said former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, in Hassan, on Sunday.

He was speaking during the valedictory function of the 32nd State-level conference of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ). “Media has forgotten its basic responsibilities as it has entered into a nexus with capitalists and industrialists,” he said.

MLA C T Ravi said, media has lost its credibility as the stress nowadays is on glorification and TRPs. “Both politicians and media persons are responsible to the people. But, due to financial intricacies, media is controlled by corporates. Media persons should have contacts with politicians and bureaucrats, but not relationship.
But, the situation has changed drastically. District level newspapers are better placed as they have no nexus with corporates,” he said.

Delivering the valedictory address, journalist H R Ranganath said, striking a balance between journalism and industry is a big challenge now. “Media persons should not think they are demi-gods. Such conferences should become platforms for introspection,” he said.
