The family of 13-year-old Arshdeep Kaur, who was molested and thrown off a moving bus in Punjab’s Moga, on Sunday finally cremated her body, lying in a mortuary for the last four days.

The victim’s father also agreed to accept a compensation of Rs 24 lakh and a job for one family member. The compensation cheque was paid by Orbit Aviation, a transport company owned by relatives of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

The developments came after Punjab Police officials and others held a meeting with the father and family members. The Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh meanwhile has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and is likely to take up the issue on Monday. The mother of the victim, who was also injured when she was thrown out of the bus along with her daughter, asked leaders of political parties including the Congress and AAP not to politicise the issue. Chief Minister Badal visited the house of the victim on Sunday evening.

The family on Sunday expressed satisfaction over the investigation being carried out by the police.

The family climbed down from its earlier stand for the registration of a case against the owners of Orbit Aviation following Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal ordering on Saturday the suspension of operations of all buses run by the management of Orbit in Punjab till its drivers undergo an orientation programme.

The body of the victim was moved from Moga to Faridkot Medical College for post-mortem. The last rites of the deceased girl were performed on Sunday evening.
The opposition parties have called for an all-party meet on May 5 to plan the next strategy against the ruling Akali Dal.

Arshdeep Kaur along with her mother Shinder Kaur was thrown off an Orbit bus by her molesters late on Wednesday. The daughter died upon impact as she hit the road while her mother sustained injuries. All the four accused in the case have been arrested.
