Vishwas row: Split in DCW, member quits

Last Updated 05 May 2015, 20:49 IST

In a dramatic turn of events, a split has occurred in the Delhi Commission for Women over summons to Aam Aadmi Party leader Kumar Vishwas, with a member resigning from the panel on Tuesday.

After Vishwas failed to turn up before the Commission on Tuesday, DCW chairperson Barkha Singh slammed him and said fresh summons has been issued against him. A member sitting next to her, Juhi Khan, disagreed with the decision and said it would malign his image.

The DCW chief tried to stop Khan from speaking at the joint press conference but the unfazed member continued her attack and alleged that the summons issued to Vishwas was “politically motivated”.

Khan revolted against Singh and said she maligned his image by issuing summons to him and his wife based on a complaint by a married woman party worker AAP that he did not rebut rumours of an affair with her. “It is a conspiracy. I am resigning from the panel in protest,” said Khan.

Singh replied that Khan had shifted her political allegiance from the Congress to AAP. “She was sent by AAP to sabotage the press conference,” said Singh.

“We have heard he (Vishwas) is going to America. Is going to America more important than reconciling a woman with her family,” she asked.

MLA absconding, says top cop

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked Delhi Police to file status report on the anticipatory bail plea of AAP MLA Jarnail Singh, accused of assaulting a civic engineer and stopping him from discharging his duty, reports DHNS.

Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi said Singh is absconding. Justice refused to grant protection to Singh from arrest and issued notice to police to file a report by Wednesday.

AAP to monitor news channels
In another sign of its disenchantment with the media, the AAP government has decided to closely monitor all the news channels while Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked it to spare wives and children of party leaders from being dragged into controversies, PTI reports.

In a first, an order has been issued to the Directorate of Information and Publicity to monitor the news channels from 9 am to 11 pm.
