The State Congress on Wednesday decided to start preparations for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections, after it told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that it would conduct the exercise within three months.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, State Congress president G Parameshwara, Law Minister T B Jayachandra, senior leaders B L Shankar, H M Revanna and N S Boseraju, who met at the chief minister’s residence, decided to start the process of redoing the ward reservation. The government had recently withdrawn the final notification on ward reservation.

The meeting decided to galvanise the party’s rank and file for the elections and entrust specific responsibilities to its MLAs and MLCs representing Bengaluru, former mayors and corporators. It also decided to create awareness among the people about the misrule of the BBMP by the BJP and educate them on the advantages of the government’s move to constitute three new corporations replacing the Palike.

The party will soon set up an election committee to select candidates for the elections. The committee is likely to be headed by Parameshwara and it will comprise former mayors and other prominent leaders from Bengaluru. The panel will invite applications from party workers who aspire to contest the polls and scrutinise them, the party sources said.

The leaders also discussed about the preparations for the upcoming gram panchayat elections in the State. A four-member committee comprising local MLAs, MLCs and Zilla Panchayat chairmen of the party will be constituted in each district to oversee the elections, the sources said.
