One person was killed and 20 people were injured in a head-on collision between a lorry and a KSRTC bus near Marasandra in Rajanukunte on the Bengaluru-Doddaballapur Road on Friday morning.

According to the police, the driver of the lorry, Anand (22), a native of Mulbagal, died on the spot. The driver of the bus, Manjunath, a native of Gauribidanur, and a passenger, Kausar Khan, 50, a resident of Pallanajoganahalli, suffered serious head injuries and are said to be in a critical condition.

The other injured passengers were rushed to various hospitals in Doddaballapur and in Bengaluru, the police said.

The cement-laden lorry was proceeding from Doddaballapur towards Bengaluru and the KSRTC bus, carrying 50 passengers, was on its way to Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh from the Kempegowda bus stand, when the accident occurred, said the police.

Sashidar, a native of Hindupur and a passenger who suffered minor injuries, told Deccan Herald, “The bus driver was driving normally, but as soon as he hit the highway, he started driving in a rash and negligent manner. The lorry was coming in the opposite direction and was at normal speed. The lorry slowed down as there was a speed-breaker, but the bus driver continued speeding and overtook a car and collided with the lorry head-on. Several passengers in the bus suffered injuries due to the impact of the collision.”

“Shocked passengers started breaking the windowpanes of the bus. Fortunately, the exit door was located on the rear side and everyone got down safely,” Sashidar said.

The public alerted the ambulance service and more than five ambulances rushed to the spot and took the injured passengers, including the bus driver, to hospitals.

A senior police officer said the bus driver was at fault as he was over-speeding and had gone to right side, crossing the median and collided with the lorry. The lorry was attached to Chamundeshwari Transport and was owned by Jagadish, he added.

The Rajanukunte police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the bus driver.
