Interesting careers in pure mathematics

studying in india
Last Updated 13 May 2015, 17:13 IST

Dear Sir,
I am a student currently studying in I PUC (PCMC). Mathematics is my favourite subject and I want to pursue a career in Maths. Could you please tell me what course options are available for me to take up after II PUC. Also, which entrance exams would you recommend me to take next year? Which colleges should I apply to if I want to pursue higher studies in Maths? Lastly, what career options will I have?
Kavitha Ramaiah

Dear Kavitha,
Study of pure Maths leads you into teaching, research etc. but the field of Applied Mathematics is growing rapidly into areas such as Big Data, Business Analytics, Business Process Services, Bio-informatics, to name a few.  Depending on your marks and your ambition, you can either do a basic degree in Maths in the best possible local college, and then go for a specialisation in an all-India institute, or you could appear for exams such as JEE, KVPY, BITSAT etc. for admission to reputed institutions such as Indian Institutes of Technology, BITS Pilani, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (www.iiser-admissions.in), Institute of Mathematics and Applications, Bhubhaneshwar, (www.iomaorissa.ac.in) and Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata and Bangalore (www.isical.ac.in).

Dear Sir,
I have completed my BE in computer science from a reputed engineering college. During my placements, I accepted a QA role in a reputed product based company. Now I am in a confusion if my decision is right. I always loved programming in college. I am planning to do MS after a couple of years. Please can you tell me if it is possible to switch to development at least after my higher education? Or should I look for a developer job off campus as a fresher itself? kindly help me to resolve my confusion.
XYZ

Dear XYZ,
It is definitely possible to make the change after a couple of years.  In fact you will find that in these two years you will be much more clear about what you would like to do long-term, so go ahead and start off.  It is the first job experience and the fact of being in a corporate set-up that broadens your horizons. Your engineering degree is the foundation, but your initial work experience will help you to identify your strengths and also your areas of interest, so that you can then set long term goals.  Even your aim of doing MS after a couple of years should be kept in abeyance till you get a broader picture of working life.

Dear Sir,
Last month I appeared for my II PUC Final Exams in Science Stream and for my further studies I want to  go for BA(Hons) in English Literature. I want to do the honors course from a reputed college rather than pursuing the ordinary course .  After searching in the internet I  found out that the best hons course is offered by the Delhi University and hence want to go for the same. But as you might be very well aware that this city is not so safe for girls and hence am afraid to go there and even my parents are quite anxious aboput it. But that seems the only option as I want to complete my graduation (in Hons) from a reputed college . So I am in a great dilemma as my other option is to do the ordinary BA course from Chennai. Please help me and guide me to take the right decision and also I wanted to know if in the Hons course we only have to study English Literature or also other subjects such as economics, history, geography. Looking forward to your response.
Nupur

Dear Nupur
It is very nice that you have a clear focus about your career goals and are determined to go to any place for your higher studies.  There have been disturbances in Delhi but if you are in a secure hostel and in a good campus, take a few precautions, you can certainly be safe there also.  The idea of doing an Honors course is to focus on one subject primarily, so you will not get diverted into other areas. In case your parents are not willing to send you all the way to Delhi, do explore colleges that offer Honors BA courses in Mumbai (SNDT, Sophias, Xaviers, etc), Symbisis Pune, or Central University of English, Hyderabad.

Dear Sir,
I am currently doing final year bcom in distance learning. I am interested to pursue MBA in regular. Now I want to know if I can do MBA in distance or in regular which would be better useful. I am afraid I will not be an eligible candidate in many companies as I did BCom in distance learning. I also want to know is regular education  given much priority in companies compared to distance learning
Sandhya Suresh

Dear Sandhya
After completing your BCom it will be very nice if you could acquire work experience, pick up further skills through short-term vocational courses in your field, and get a feel of what type of work you enjoy most.  It will be better if you do not go for an MBA till you are clear about the domain expertise you wish to aim for. When you have established yourself then you can take a call whether you would like to take a break and get into a full-time MBA, or join a weekend program or go in for distance learning.  It is popularly felt that you can get full advantage of an MBA only after you have acquired enough work experience. The good B-schools also give preference in admission to those who have been doing meaningful work.
