Maruti Suzuki Swift, the upper A2 segment hatchback from the stable of the country’s largest car-maker which marries a bold and aggressive European design philosophy with Japanese precision and technology, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month.

The car, whose global launch was in November 2004 in Japan, was launched in India in May 2005. A diesel variant followed in 2007, along with minor upgrades in 2010 and 2014, and a full model change in August 2011.

Through all these, the model has remained a perennial favourite, clocking cumulative sales of 1.3 million since its launch.

RS Kalsi, Executive Director (M&S), Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) said, “Over 1.3 million Swift cars have been bought in India so far, transforming the landscape of the Indian auto industry and inspiring new products, market segments, and categories. Over the years, the Swift has evolved in features, looks and technology, often defining the changes in aspiration and preferences of Indian car customers.”

The company said Swift has broken the myth about the so-called ‘big car features’ by offering them to its customers. It said Swift has swept Car of the Year Awards in India, twice over, once when it was launched (2005), and again when the full model change was introduced (2011).

According to the company, the latest avatar of Swift Diesel saw a 10 per cent increase in fuel efficiency, while Swift Petrol improved fuel efficiency by 9.5 per cent, making Swift the most fuel efficient car in its category. Maruti has lined up month-long celebrations to engage with Swift owners and enthusiasts to mark the occasion.
