R'sthan OBCs oppose reservation for Gujjars

Last Updated 23 May 2015, 18:50 IST

Jat and Other Backward Classes (OBC) leaders in Rajasthan have come together to oppose the five per cent reservation demand by the Gujjars.

The OBCs have threatened to hold statewide protest if their reservation quota of 21 per cent is reduced to create a separate category for the Gujjars. “Gujjar leaders are demanding the state government to create a Special Backward Class (SBC) category within OBC quota. It will reduce the OBC quota which accommodates 91 castes in Rajasthan. Moreover, they are also demanding to remove Jat community from OBC category which is unfair,” said Rajaram Meel, president of Rajasthan Jat Mahasabha. We will not tolerate classification in OBC quota and can go to any extent to save our reservation, he added.

Leaders of Meghwal community have said that a few Gujjar leaders are misguiding the community for their self interest. They are provoking their community to hold violent protest, which will only lead to casualties and loss of public property.  “Earlier, they demanded reservation under ST/SC category and targeted the Meena community. It disturbed social harmony and led to violent clashes between the Meena community and security forces. This time they are demanding classification in OBC quota and are targeting Jats and OBCs,” said Ramesh Lal, leader of Meghwal community.

The state government should take lessons from the past and act wisely, he added.Rejecting the 5 per cent reservation demand of Gujjars, OBC leaders blamed that Gujjars cannot demand special backward class status because there are many other castes in Rajasthan which are more backward than Gujjars.

“Gujjars cannot demand special backward class status because there are 71 castes in Rajasthan which are more backward than Gujjars,” said Satnarayan Singh, leader of Mali community.
