Metro rail, pending projects to take off

With Jayalalitha back at the helm of the Tamil Nadu government, several major projects, including Chennai Metro Rail which is ready for unveiling, are expected to take off immediately.  

Since the Commissioner of Railway Safety who inspected the Chennai metro line between Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar gave clearance for commercial operation, Jayalalitha is expected to inaugurate it very soon.

The much-touted Global Investor’s Meet (GIM), which was deferred, is expected to take place very soon.

 Though the government under O Panneerselvam had claimed that the GIM was postponed on account of “a strong feedback from many foreign investors that the event may be held after the summer season”, the early inauguration of the meeting is expected to gain momentum.

A budget provision of Rs 100 crore has been made by the Tamil Nadu government for the conduct of GIM. Roadshows have already been conducted in France, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Germany. 

With Jayalalitha returning to the State Secretariat, her pet project, “Amma Canteen” is expected so see an expansion with officials  planning to open 50 such new canteens very shortly. In addition, Jayalalitha is likely to announce an array of new people’s welfare measures in the full-fledged Tamil Nadu Assembly session, which is likely to start next week.

On the road transport facility front, over 300 new buses,  belonging to various state transport corporations, need to be flagged off.  A senior Transport Department official said that more than 350 new buses belonging to the state road transport corporation, which have been kept in the shed, will be flagged off for the public very soon. Inauguration of an integral complex in Koyambedu market and several housing schemes across the state were also expected to get the nod.
