Heatwave claims 223 lives in Telangana, AP

As many as 223 people in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana succumbed to the blazing heatwave sweeping the country even as the blistering sun  continued to drive the mercury upwards with Delhi recording its hottest day of this season.

 

Unrelenting heatwave across Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Telangana claimed 85 more lives on Saturday, while the toll rose to eight in West Bengal.

Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, too, reeled under the intense heatwave with the Met department predicting tougher days for the people of these states.

After reviewing the situation, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said that he has directed NGOs and party workers to set up water and butter milk distributions centers on war footing across the state.  Unannounced power cuts have returned as electricity consumption has doubled in many places with increased use of air coolers and air conditioners. Shops and establishments in commercial centers such as Vijayawada, Guntur, Visakhapatnam Kakinada and Nellore also saw reduced footfall.

In Telangana the situation remained the same with temperatures of 42 to 42.28 degrees Celsius in Hyderabad.  Day time temperatures stood at Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Khammam, Medak and Warangal stood at 45 degrees in many places and 47 degrees Celsius in Nalgonda. 

Coal workers in the Singareni collieries of Adilabad-Karimnagar-Khammam belt bore the brunt of the relentless heat coupled by heat underground have suffered severe dehydration. However the production process has not suffered. The toll due to the heatwave in West Bengal touched eight on Saturday. A taxi driver died of suspected heat stroke on Saturday in south Kolkata. 

As the weather office predicted a prolonged heatwave in the city, the temperature is likely to touch 40 degrees Celsius within the next couple of days. 

For the first time this summer, three western Odisha towns recorded the highest day time temperature of 46 degree Celsius and above on Saturday. As many as 13 urban and semi-urban centres across the state, including capital Bhubaneswar, recorded the highest day time temperature of 40 degree Celsius and more. 

Uttar Pradesh continued to sizzle with day temperatures maintaining an upward trend at many places.
